Always in the presence
I wrote this liturgy for the beginning of worship in 2016 when 9/11 fell on a Sunday. As I came across it today, I was touched by how it speaks to the tragedies and shadows of our time. + … Continue reading
More on Mary’s cry
The cry for justice, for the setting right of the world is deep in the scriptures. Israel’s faith is born in the cry of the people in bondage and anchored again in the cry of despair at the destruction of … Continue reading

All children born this night
I am lost looking into the face of my new grandson. Whatever conversation I began is forgotten as I hold him in my arms. There is only this moment, this single, eternal moment. Continue reading

Sometimes it is not our prayer
Sometimes the prayer of the psalm is not our prayer. Sometimes we are not the persecuted victim. Sometimes we are not the grieving penitent. Sometimes we are not the anguished sufferer. Continue reading

Praying Good Friday
O thou who art the voice in the eternal silence, the light in the spreading darkness the warmth in the growing cold, the peace in the rising fear, the truth in the crowded confusion: Wounded, you heal. Broken, you restore. … Continue reading

Ashen crosses and Jesus’ way of prayer
A Reflection on Ash Wednesday and the Lord’s Prayer The key texts for the reflection this Ash Wednesday were Isaiah 58:5-8 and Matthew 6:1-21. The Lord’s Prayer is the focus of our preaching during Lent this year. Daily verses and … Continue reading
