Ash Wednesday begins the journey
Tomorrow we begin our long journey to Jerusalem where Jesus will wash feet, break bread, pray in Gethsemane, get kissed by Judas and abandoned by his followers, be abused by the thugs who snatched him in the night and tortured by Roman Soldiers in the full light of day. And he will not fight back. He will raise no army. He will lift no sword. He will call for no chariots of fire. There will be no joining of earthly and heavenly armies to slay the imperial troops of Rome. There will be hammer and nails and a tomb with its entrance barred by a stone. Continue reading
Pregnant with the truth to come
On Psalm 69 1 Save me, O God, …..for the waters have come up to my neck. 2 I sink in deep mire, …..where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, …..and the flood sweeps over me. … Continue reading
“I kept that promise.”
It’s hard to describe what happened to me at the altar during the prayers of the church, yesterday. The breath of God
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” –John 20:21-22 Continue reading
The human journey
The journey of human life is the journey of discovering that our lives are not our own: that our lives have their beginning in God, that they have their end in God, and that they are to be lived with God and for God – which is also to say, they are to be lived with our neighbor and for our neighbor. Continue reading

The Big Story
Those of us who are not rooted in the scriptures often find them strange. Even the word “God” is hard for some of us. But our confession as a Christian community is that there is a heartbeat at the center of all things, a spirit, a breath, pushing and pulling the world towards justice and mercy and goodness and life. Continue reading

We have seen the chariots of fire
There are no answers. There is only the pain of our grief and all the complicated emotions it brings. There is only the great mystery of God, the unfathomable mystery of that hidden power and presence that lies at the heart of all things. Continue reading
